3.3 Reflectance Transformation Imaging

3.3.1 RTI: An Introduction

Reflectance Transformation Imaging (RTI) is a method of computational imaging belonging to the category of computational illumination. These methods are mostly based on the adaptation and control of light to create a new digital representation in which illumination reveals/enhances information not visible in a conventional image. Although RTI was first developed for computer graphics it gradually evolved into a method widely applied to cultural heritage datasets, since it only requires regular photographic equipment and freely available software and can be used both indoors and outdoors and for different object sizes and material types. In the following presentation, you will hear more about the history of RTI and some characteristic applications in cultural heritage and beyond.
