    Unit II: Using our Senses

    Painting

Allegory of the five senses, by Herman van Aldewereld

To train your personal multimodal literacy and be able to handle the increase of information in audiovisual form, you need to be more conscious of the role of your senses in processing information. As such, this unit revolves around various forms of literacy. Lesson 2.1 covers the relation between technology, literacy and sensory experiences. Section 2.1.1 offers a brief historical sketch on how the uptake of new technologies changes the character of our literacies. In 2.1.2 the focus is on the interaction between our senses and our brain. Lesson 2.2 is dedicated to Aural Literacy. It starts off with an elaboration on theories about Sound Studies , which can then be further explored through three exercises in the following pages. The final lesson of this unit, lesson 2.3 briefly covers theories related to Visual Literacy, followed by an exercise to analyze the visual features of a painting.
