Best Practices In Encoding Dictionary Data

How to Use This Lesson
For each of the sections in this lesson, make sure that you read the corresponding section in the TEI Guidelines. This lesson is not a replacement of the Guidelines but rather a collection of best practices that should be consulted after you have familiarized yourself with the Dictionary Chapter in its entirety.
This lesson is based on the current draft of TEI-Lex-0, a working document that has been developed in the cooperation between DARIAH WG "Lexical Resources", ENeL WG "Retrodigitized Dictionaries" and H2020-funded PARTHENOS.
Since the recommendations of the TEI-Lex-0 community have not been finalized yet, it is likely that some of the solutions proposed in this lesson will change over the next months. We expect to publish TEI-Lex-0 -- and hence the final version of this lesson -- by September 2017.
Some solutions proposed in the TEI-Lex-0 will require changes to be introduced to the TEI schema. The acceptance of those changes will depend on the vote by the TEI Council.
Since this is a pedagogical resource, we won't be covering those proposals but will focus only on recommending best-practices that do not require any additional customization of the TEI schema.
So, once again, before you continue:
- read the Dictionary Chapter
- as you progress through the dictionary chapter, work on your own dictionary sample as well as the entry Lexicographer from Johnson's dictionary. It is always better to try to apply the encoding suggested by TEI on concrete material, instead of passively following the examples provided by TEI
