3.1. Development of AR

3.1.1. Introduction

The Augmented Reality (AR) applications and scenarios were developed using the cross-platform game-based engine, UNITY and UNITY’s AR Foundation toolkit, which facilitates the building of AR experiences for both Android and iOS, using a multi-platform approach (https://unity.com/). In this study, the AR applications were developed for mobile devices running the Android operating system. The Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) technique was deployed, where the targeted physical environment was enriched with 2D and 3D objects, such as the circular home structures in Choirokoitia and one of the houses at the Ringfort of Sandby Borg. Avatar-rigged animated models and multiple other artefacts, assets, music, and speech were added to engage users and make the scenarios more entertaining, interactive, and realistic.
