In France, they speak of 'live art' (Art Vivant) or, more commonly, 'live performance' (Spectacle Vivant) and the artistic activities that are related to it are defined by the French Ministry of Culture. For there to be a live performance, the artistic creation accomplished in a performative manner must include the participation and presence of the artists at the time of its realization.

All performances "produced or broadcast by persons who, with a view to the public performance of a work of the mind, ensure the physical presence of at least one performing artist". Dance, music and theatre, and the more unusual fashion shows, in all the diversity of their forms (opera, variety music, choirs, brass bands, circus, street arts, storytelling, puppets, etc.), belong to the live performance, as opposed to the recorded performance."
