1.1.5 The Need for a Plan B

Designers develop multiple concepts to show to their clients

The consequence of using abductive reasoning is that you never can know upfront what the best solution is for a given problem. So, having only one plan to solve it, without a plan B, is incorrect and even risky. This is why designers always develop multiple concepts to show to their clients, users, or other stakeholders. They consider multiple possibilities that may work out well and see what the best solution is for the problem, according to the stakeholders.

This way of reasoning totally reverses problem-solving. Rather than focusing on the problem and what causes it, design thinking focuses on developing and testing alternative solutions. It is learning what the problem is and how to solve it by creating and testing solutions. So, when a problematic situation requires design thinking, prepare yourself for developing alternatives. You do that actively by using frames, as we will explain in the next lesson.
