3.1 Changing Notions of Museum Narrative and Audiences

3.1.5 The Danger of the Single Story

Telling stories that reflect diversity matters. In this video Chimamanda Adichie explains how The Single Story found in literature impacted the perceptions of the world outside of the one she raised in. As child, she often believed that stories followed a Western structure and always included foreign characters. That is how she began to write her own stories, not realising how far removed from her reality it was. Even as she became older and more travelled, her interpretations of countries such as the United Sates of America and Mexico were still heavily impacted by the 'Single Story' phenomenon.

Museums also experience this dilemma: eg, how can cultural institutions convey stories appropriate to their institution and/or the people they serve. How can institutions be more inclusive in the narratives they create around the exhibitions they develop and display. After watching this video, look at the questions in the exercise and try to answer them as openly as possible.
