5.3 Listening to Layers of Spatialized Sound
5.3.1 Introduction
In the previous lessons, we established that sound provides an excellent means to situate and quite literally position an audience in space (which is itself unfolding in time), and that locative or place-based audio narratives exploit these characteristics to stimulate listeners to experience place and space in new ways. In this lesson, we will consider key concepts from the field of sound studies that can provide us with a language to discuss space/place through audio. These will be useful to understand how audio narratives construct the experience of a spatial environment, as well as take note of the complex ways in which the situated acoustic/spatial environment of the listener and the acoustic/spatial environment constructed in the narrative relate.
