4.1 Capturing Data for Structure from Motion

4.1.4 Exercise: SfM Capturing Scenarios

Exercise: Time to design your own SfM workflow

In this exercise you are presented with three objects of different scale, materials, and contexts. Once you complete this exercise you should be able to:
  • Design SfM workflows for subjects of different scale, materials, and contexts
  • Identify problems in capturing subjects and come up with appropriate solutions

The Task

You have been assigned with the task to produce 3D models for these using Structure from Motion. Since you will only have the chance to capture them once, you will need to design the ideal SfM workflow in advance and think about possible 'obstacles' in the capturing process.

Write a blog post or note down in your reflective diary the following:
  1. The equipment you will need;
  2. The approximate number and angle of images for each object (and an explanation of why particular angles and a certain number of pictures is suitable for the object);
  3. Potential problematic elements;
  4. Ways to overcome the problems.
